We designed and implemented outreach for secondary schools and businesses on how to decrease stormwater pollution caused by charity car wash events.
Project Description
The Triangle team implemented a comprehensive program to address runoff from fundraiser car washes. In partnership with Full Circle Environmental, starting in 2006 for Bellevue, 2008 for Redmond and 2011 for Kirkland, Triangle assisted these cities in addressing National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit directives related to surface water. This program includes outreach on stormwater regulations to business owners, site managers, property owners, secondary school administrators and faculty, as well as parent and high school student groups. This outreach coupled with safer fundraising alternatives and hands-on assistance and education during weekend site visits has resulted in a dramatic decline in car wash related pollution. The data gathered from the projects each year has also allowed cities to evaluate and improve current city regulations on this issue and the most effective best management practices to promote in their jurisdictions.
