Community Engagement

Our approach to community engagement includes disrupting traditional methods of public involvement to create processes that empower communities to take an active role in decisions that impact their lives and shape their environments.

We think of community engagement as a pathway to opening doors to those who have been long excluded from policy development – including Black, Indigenous, and people of color, low-income communities, people with disabilities, immigrants, refugees, youth, and others. Our community engagement approach is based on the following principles:

  • Center impacted communities
  • Meet people where they are at
  • Move at the community’s speed
  • Recognize power, privilege, and position
  • Build relationships rather than extract information
  • Recognize and overcome barriers to participation
